Who Are Jules & Phil? Introducing the kula Founders

To get a founder profile of a different kind, we thought we'd let other people describe the founders and their idea – namely those who supposedly know them best: their parents and their closest friends. What came out of it? You can find out in the following paragraphs.

We could of course list all the frequently mentioned superlatives and embellished qualities here. For example, that Julian is incredibly intelligent and hungry for knowledge, or that Phil is one of the most dedicated people around. But we could instead focus on the far more interesting – and admittedly funnier – facts that were shared with us. After long and careful deliberation (about 2 seconds), we chose the latter. :)

When you consider that these two guys once didn't even dare to go to the optician alone – or ask for a lollipop in a restaurant – it makes it all the more impressive how no stage in the world seems too big for them today when presenting their vision. Not even the huge audience of a well-known TV show can slow them down anymore. "Bigger is better!"

That Julian always liked to think big even as a child is made perfectly clear by his wish for a rhinoceros as a pet. We can all be very grateful that his uncle decided to give him two female jerboas instead – even if they did multiply at a rather miraculous pace. It seems he always had a knack for making things grow. In that spirit, we can only hope that the number of apps multiplies just as quickly as those childhood jerboas.

Jules has a good hand not only for multiplying things – he can also solve a Rubik's Cube in under 2 minutes. Yet to this day he hasn't managed to crack the puzzle of how to get a driving licence. That hasn't stopped him from forging his own path and staying on track for success. This quality also helped him produce outstanding UI/UX designs – not just for kula, but benefiting many others as well.

Rounding out this unmistakable duo at kula is programming genius Phil. Philip wrote his very first lines of code at the tender age of 12 (!), already showing his talent from the start. At 16, our CTO was drawn to the USA, spending a whole year at a technology-focused high school in Maryland. Although the young Phil began the trip as an enthusiastic Windows devotee with a matching laptop, it didn't take long before he was won over by Apple technology. His first MacBook – which he still owns today – marked the beginning of a success story, and Phil is now regarded as Austria's best Swift programmer!

It wasn't always clear that Phil would enrich the world with his programming skills. His greatest childhood dream was to become a Lego Technic civil engineer. We can probably all agree he would have nailed that too! All in all, we're glad he chose the path he's on now. With kula, a new era of app development for SMEs and sole traders is being ushered in – kula is both toolbox and materials store for app creation, all in one.
